Successfully balancing work and school is not easily done, but is it beneficial to students in the end?

About Me

All Work and No Study?

While most of us cringe at the thought of trying to work a steady part-time or full time job while in college, in the last few years, it's become more of a daunting reality, that for most of us, going to school can no longer be a college student's only focus. In recent years the phenomena of college students working while attending school has been on the rise. Many of these students happen to be working full time with weekly hours ranging upwards of 35-40 per week.

I happen to be one of those college students working an insane amount of hours. As a store manager of a company I have worked for since I began working at age 16, I'm required to work at least 32 hours a week in the store. Slowly I'm learning that running a store is rather similar to being a parent, in regards to the fact that even when I'm not "working," I'm pretty much always on call to help solve a problem or answer any questions. At any point on any given day. For example, currently as I'm typing my About Me page, I'm helping solve a register dilemma at work as well. To add to that, I also am a server at another restaurant in a nearby mall and a full time student at San Francisco State University.

My goal of this blog is to give readers the option to follow along through this journey I've embarked on in trying to maintain two jobs as well as my GPA, and somewhat of a social life, but also to relate to. I know I'm not the only student out there balancing a hectic work and school life as the current statistics prove. Along the way I would like to really learn more about if it's more beneficial to build a strong work ethic, or if focusing more energy into school and the clubs and organizations offered on campus will offer more opportunities for us students in the future.
